THE VOYNICH MANUSCRIPT is an illustrated hand-written codex using an unknown character set in an unknown language. The most recent account of the provenance of the manuscript is that it was acquired in 1912 by an American rare books dealer, Wilfrid M. Voynich, for whom this manuscript is named. He had purchased the manuscript from the Jesuit College in Frascati, Italy. In 1969 H.P. Krauss, who had purchased the manuscript from the Voynich estate, donated the manuscript to the Yale University Beinecke Rare Book Library, where it is currently located.
